Tony Mangan begins his world walk today. Don’t forget to follow his progress on www.theworldwalk.blogspot.ie. And Serge Girard continues his amazing run, still averaging 70 km per day. Follow him on www.sergegirard.com. His Garmin data can be accessed via the link at the bottom of his Home page.

This morning I was running in Centennial Park and noticed a cyclist flying by in time trial position. He looked to be doing about 60 km per hour. I wonder what lap time he ended up doing? It brought back memories of when I used to do time trials around Centennial Park back in 1989. I recall my best times were: 1 lap – 5:05; 2 laps – 10:34; 5 laps – 28:20. Even my one lap time averaged just 45 km per hour for the nearly 4 km. The guy I saw today was definitely going faster than that. I couldn’t get even close to those times these days.

Today’s world run photo is another from the Colorado Rockies. Wouldn’t you just love to run down that road?

Today was a bit of a slog. Temperatures have dropped and the wind was icy. But I did know there’d be days like this.

I spent a lot of time on the Pacific Coastal Highway to Malibu. When I finally reached the town I was sure I could hear the sound of Charlie Waffles singing “Who Cut the Cheese”, coming from one of the seaside houses. Then again, Charlie Waffles is dead. I must have been imagining it.

It was one of those days that are good to finish. Tomorrow I head into Los Angeles, where we will be catching up with a former student of Carmel’s – who she taught in Kindergarten in 1981. We will actually be staying in Hollywood.

Unfortunately, the Ellen show informed us they have a full schedule at the moment (Justin Bieber’s 18th birthday), but will be following the progress of the run. Maybe in the future. It was nice to know they  phoned in the first place.

It was a stunningly beautiful start to the day – a crisp and clear morning, with mist rising everywhere from the evaporating frost. You’ll see what I mean when you check out today’s photos.

The first half of the day entailed a lot of hills like yesterday, but the afternoon was mainly flat through a valley. It was a very quiet road, which I appreciated greatly – pretty close to a perfect day for running.

I finished in the town of St Elix le Chateau, where there happens to be an old chateau (surprise!). I was expecting to have to commute some distance to the nearest accommodation, but Carmel saw a sign indicating a local chambre d’hote. So, we’ve ended up in a wonderful old French farmhouse, full of antique furniture and original trimmings. It makes for a nice change from a hotel room. A lovely French couple are our hosts, and I can smell dinner cooking already – mmmmmmm!!!!
