Same weather conditions today – they never really change at the equator – but I am handling it much better. I didn’t suffer too badly at all.

The roadside eating places are a lifesaver for me, selling both food and drinks. The latter is obviously more important, but I have been enjoying the various delicacies as well. I never really know what I’m getting, but haven’t been disappointed yet. I think my favourite so far has been deep-fried mushrooms.

I have often been called “boss” when I have entered a shop. I think to myself “Hey, I’m not the boss of you”. It’s a throwback to the colonial days, but has persisted to modern times. There is no hint of subservience when they say it – to them it’s just a humorous name for white guys.

One thing is for sure – the reaction in Malaysia has been the friendliest of anywhere in the world, and that’s saying something. I am constantly getting waves from cars, and people call out greetings from the side of the road as I run by. They simply don’t see many Caucasians, especially those running in the heat of the day in the middle of nowhere.

Tomorrow will be my last day of running in Malaysia, and I’m hoping to have a dip in the ocean – the Straits of Malacca – when I finish, so long as the water is clean. I will soon find out.
